Mary And Martha (Hbo) (Mod) from Warner Bros.

From director Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games) and writer Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, War Horse), this uplifting HBO Films drama focuses on two very different women – an upscale American interior designer named Mary (Hilary Swank) and a middle-class Englishwoman named Martha (Brenda Blethyn) – who form an unlikely bond following the losses of their only children from malaria contracted in Africa. Battling their lingering grief and the strains on their marriages, the two work together to raise awareness of malaria, a preventable and treatable disease, while recovering their sense of purpose. The film offers an inspiring template for overcoming loss, while showing how ordinary people can make a difference in influencing social policy and affecting positive change.

The Frozen Dead (Mod) from Warner Bros.

Dana Andrews stars in the ghoulish, sci-fi horror story The Frozen Dead. Twenty years after World War II has ended, members of the Nazi party remain, and they are determined to again rise to power. Fearful for his life, Norberg continues his research – in increasingly horrific, murderous ways. But when his niece’s (Anna Palk) best friend goes missing, the young woman tries desperately to enlist help from an American scientist (Philip Gilbert) to stop the madness. Andrews took many jobs to pay the bills while trying to make it “big.” His boss at a Van Nuys gas station was so impressed with the actor’s determination that he paid for his acting and singing lessons.

Captured and accused of being a spy, she is brought before the formidable Hannibal (Howard Keel), who orders her executed. Amytis’ plea to “spare Rome” intrigues Hannibal and, inevitably, he falls under her spell. Black Market Babies (Mod) from Warner Bros.

“A smart guy could clean up in a racket like this.” So says Eddie Condon (Kane Richmond), a smooth-talking hood who sells unwanted babies to childless rich couples. Teaming up with a broken-down sawbones (Ralph Morgan) and a silver-tongued shyster (George Meeker), Condon operates a private maternity home where he rakes in the dough until a pre-paid baby is stillborn. Intent on keeping the cash, he hands over his sister-in-law’s newborn instead, a baby-switching scheme that soon gives way to frame-ups, fallouts and murder. The type of film the majors would avoid lest it harm their mainstream reputation, Black Market Babies is a prime example of the controversial programmers only a B movie studio like Monogram Pictures could make. Based on a December 1944 Woman’s Home Companion article that was reprinted in Reader’s Digest, this searing drama is both cutting-edge and exploitative, a lurid expos? that’s lost none of its power to shock.

Rider On A Dead Horse (Mod) from Warner Bros.

The search for gold brings three men together – but greed drives one of them to murder! John Vivyan, star of Blake Edwards’ TV series Mr. Lucky, trades urbane cool for sweaty grit to play Hayden, one of three tough prospectors who strike it big, then bury their fortune in the blistering Arizona desert to protect it from hostile Apaches. But Hayden needs protection himself when one of his partners decides all the loot is better than a third. A gold hunter bites the dust, and a wounded Hayden must rely on a knife-wielding Chinese woman to escape the same doom. Fistfights, an Indian attack, a manhunt, a jailbreak and a dynamite-fueled denouement add to the sagebrush thrills. Bruce Gordon, who unnerved a generation of television viewers as mobster Frank Nitti on The Untouchables, is chilling as the greed-maddened killer.
